Youth Policy

YOUTH POLICY

Kids are natural climbers, and we welcome them to join us at On the Rocks.

Youth
Policy

We do have some rules and restrictions in place to ensure everyone is having a safe and enjoyable climbing experience.

  • We have a Simple Rule: Look up! Watch out for other climbers above. Never walk under other climbers or between the climbing wall and belayers working with ropes. The Simple rule helps us avoid 99% of our potential issues.

  • We also have a Hard Rule: No Running. Running is not acceptable within the Climbing Gym. The risk, should an exuberant little climber suddenly appear under a falling climber are significant to everyone. Please remind your group members to walk and save their energy for climbing the walls.

  • We require that you are close enough to communicate with them (without raising your voice), and intervene if they get into a potentially dangerous situation.

  • Active supervision is required, and supervisors are responsible for the behaviour of the youth they are supervising.

  • Children ages 8 and under: the adult to child ratio for children ages 8 and under must not exceed 1:2 adult to child and cannot be left alone.

  • Children ages 9-12: the adult to child ratio for children 9-12 years old must not exceed 1:4 adult to children and they cannot be left alone in the facility.

  • Children ages 13-16: the child must have an adult to supervise their visit, 13+ and older are permitted in the bouldering room without direct supervision, however, they must be safe and respectful of our gym etiquette.

  • Children 16 and under are not to be left alone in our facility at any time. No exceptions.

  • OTR staff have the right to require active supervision for any child under the age of 18.

  • Please note that these rules apply to climbers bringing children with them to climb; Climbing Camps + Birthday Parties have a separate set of rules and regulations. Visit our Climbing Parties page for more information on those.

Let them climb our walls instead of yours.

On The Rocks offers an exciting option for youth birthday parties. Our two-hour Climbing Party session starts with one hour of guided climbing before heading up to our Party Room for an hour of celebration.
